Product Description Improving upon one of the most celebrated lenses in the Canon EF line is no easy feat, but Canon has done just that. The all-new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM increases the speed, performance and optical quality of the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM while maintaining all of the characteristics that have made it a legend for professionals and advanced amateurs alike. The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM features one fluorite and five UD elements for increased optical quality and reduced chromatic aberration. It has a minimum focusing distance of 1.2m/3.9 ft. at all zoom settings, which is useful for photographers in smaller spaces trying to get closer to a subject. It features a next-generation Optical Image Stabilizer, providing up to 4 stops of correction at all focal lengths. And as with all L-series lenses, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is dust- and moisture-resistant and designed for use in the challenging environments typical of rigorous professional use.

[BLEEP]ing Insane! September 2, 2010 Shannon Matteson I have been lusting after a 70-200 f/2.8 lens for 2 years now. After spending over a month researching which brand and model to get, I realized that I could never be truly happy without The Best. So I was going to get a Mark I version of this lens... until the Mark II came out. Then I had to decide if it was really worth the jump in price.
Being that I have a tendency to choose "the best or nothing"... it really didn't take me long to start saving. Again.
Disappointed, sure, but the reviews told me that my patience would be rewarded. And it has been.
To be honest, I have only used it for a little while so far, so I'll update this review when I have more to say, but so far here's what I can tell you.
The weight: It's there. This lens will require a tripod or a monopod for long shoots, unless you want to get sore. Rating: [BLEEP]ing insane!
Image quality: Expletives of an uncouth nature escaped my mouth involuntarily when I first saw the IQ this lens produces for myself. On my 5D Mark II, it's ... well, it's [BLEEP]ing insane! This lens makes my Canon 24-70 F/2.8 L look somewhat soft, even after being micro-adjusted. And believe me, I have a sharp copy! The difference is obvious.
Image Stabilization: Very good. I can read the street signs a block away at 200 mm, ISO 100, f/2.8 with a shutter speed of 1/60. This is where the sharpness really shines, because even relying on IS, it's sharper than my Canon 24-70 2.8 L. But indoors, in a dimly lit room, at f/2.8 and ISO 100, getting shutter speeds of 1/6th to 1/8th of a second, and 200 mm, I was getting motion blur that was faint, but noticeable. It effectively made the resulting image soft, while remaining fully recognizable (and usable). I wasn't quite as blown away by that as by everything else, but maybe I should be, considering the number of stops distance that is?
This lens is bigger than I expected. It also allows me to shoot through chain link fence without being impeded by that fence... last I went to the zoo, I was shooting a 28-135, and the 135 wasn't enough to blur the fence out. My uncle was shooting a 28-300 Nikon lens, and was getting great shots I could not get because his lens at 200-300 mm was blurring the fencing out. Now I can not just shoot the things he can shoot, but blow away the image quality his lens gets!!!
My first impression: Blown away. Breathlessly in awe. Ho-Lee-[BLEEP]! I have to say, I think my 24-70 L is feeling dejected now.
That price tag you see on this baby? It's also [BLEEP]ing insane. But when you consider the factors - quality of build, quality of image, quality of IS, light gathering power, and the reasonable expectation that this will be a purchase you only have to make once to get literally a lifetime of exceptional use and value out of the thing - it is worth what it costs. Every penny. I wasn't sure I'd agree with the others here saying that, but I do.
Just one word of warning: if you buy this lens, be careful. It's so sharp, you may reasonably worry about cutting your eyes looking the results. :) More when I have put her through her paces.
If you're thinking of getting this lens, don't hesitate! Just do it! September 2, 2010 Kika I've been considering the 70-200 is 2.8 for almost a half a year now. Being a portrait shooter first and a landscape shooter second, my 24-70 2.8 (mounted on 50D) suited my needs quite well. I kept telling myself that the 70-200 would be too long of a lens for me... Well, let me tell you, I was completely wrong. Boy am I glad I took the plunge and purchased this lens. This is the lens that I will keep on my camera from now on. I never realized the possibilities of this focal length until now. I now find myself shooting things I could have never had using the 24-70. For example, a bird on a branch, a helicopter in flight, a distant high tech military radar, and oh yes, portraits that beat the 24-70. This lens is incredibly sharp, fast focusing, has great contrast and an awesome IS system. I can now take SHARP handheld shots at .5 of a second. Did I mention that this thing looks as beautiful as the pictures that it takes? Not only does it appear to be incredibly well made, it is also a very attractive looking lens. I could go on and on about this lens but you get the picture. Let me just say, If you are like I was waiting around to get this thing, just stop reading the reviews already, add this thing to your cart, and buy it! Trust me, you will not regret it. by the way, Amazon did a great job of shipping this lens to me. Previous reviews pertaining to amazons poor packaging of their shipment is now a thing of the past. My lens was surrounded with air cushions when it arrived.
Hands down my best lens purchase ever August 17, 2010 J. Hall I have owned the 24-70, 70-200 f4 IS, 24-105, 100-400, 50 1.4 and the 10-22
This is by far the best money I have ever spent on a lens. The colors are beautiful and amore importantly fully accurate. Sharpness and focusing speed is phenomenal. This will be my bread winner for the foreseeable future. Congratulations Canon!
Very Happy August 17, 2010 Frank Sandy I have the Mark5 D2 with the 24-70L and this was my original purchase. I am not too happy with the 24-70 L it lacks sharpness and color if I am any distance other then 3ft from my subject. After receiving and shooting a couple of shots with the 70-200 I finally have a working combination....spectacular color and sharpness through out. I am going to send my 24-70 to canon for inspection. I think it should operate the same. This lens was a whole lot of money but my pics just went up 10 notches. Get and you wont regret it .... Mine is USM.
Best lens I've ever used in 40 years of photography August 4, 2010 Historken (Fort Dodge, Iowa USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've had this lens for some time now and continue to be amazed by the razor sharp, color perfect images it renders. I'm not going to discuss all the pros as they are numerous and the only "con" would be weight and even that is perfectly balanced. I simply wanted to pay tribute to Canon for making a superb lens. It is so much sharper than my 17-40 L series lens as to be incomparable in my mind. It's quite expensive but I've never regretted its cost. It utterly re-defines "excellence" in my mind.
