Charging Problems with Simple Solution March 20, 2010 John Q. Public A lot of reviewers mention battery charging problems. I had a similar problem, which I fixed with $0.01 of aluminum foil. The stock battery pack has a single metal contact on the bottom for recharging. The metal does not always provide good contact with the recharging port on the camera due to the plastic sheathing around the battery. Solution: One small 1/4" x 1/4" x 1/32" folded piece of aluminum foil squeezed in between the battery pack and the charging contact. Use this solution at your own risk, but it worked for me. *Do not* let the foil come into contact with both metal contacts as this will short the AA battery terminals and can result in a destroyed flip, usb port, computer, or a fire!!!
Other than battery issue I have not had any other problems with the flip.
Stay way back March 19, 2010 Daniel R. Gannon III 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Attention all considering buying the Flip video"thing". I bought one for a trip to Australia. Got five days into the trip, shooting on a cruise ship. It locked up, would not respond to any of the buttons and got too hot to keep in my pocket. Upon return to US I took it to seller. He (Costco, thank God) provided a refund, but since the unit wouldn't take a charge or otherwise respond, my vacation videos are lost. There is no way to get into the unit to get video out, there are no removable video cards, or other portals from which to recover whatever you've recorded. Stay far away.
Flipping Mad Poor Quality Product March 19, 2010 Ace (East Palo Alto, California, US) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I never wrote a review on anything, but I am so mad that this is my first. I got two Flips UltraHD's from Amazon. I received the first Flip on 3/15/2010. This one the battery didn't charge. Amazon's great customer service, I got another one the next day. Well, guess what? It worked day one, and day two it does a hard lock up consistently. The only way to turn it off is to pull out the battery!!!! Absurd. Two bad Flips in the same week. Needless to say, I will be returning my second Flip and getting another camcorder from another company. Looking up Flip on the web, you will find they have tons of issues for their camcorders. Lesson learned, don't buy from name recognition alone. For a product so simple in design to have so many issues is a testament of poor quality control from the company. Instead of the Flip they should have named it the Screwed, cause that's how I feel after buying it.
Great buy for the money March 19, 2010 Danielle N. Freda (Indiana, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I couldn't ask for more for the price! Excellent quick use camera, perfect for short fun videos or catching those first baby steps^_~
pretty serious design flaw March 18, 2010 K. Turner (San Francisco, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We've actually owned two of these, and loved both--at least while we had functioning units, which wasn't very long in either case. The problem is that the lens isn't recessed at all, so even a very minor bump will break the small piece of glass over the lens--making the camera useless. That wouldn't be so bad except the company offers no way to repair it, not even if you are willing to pay for the service. It is considered a non-replaceable part. The first time it happened to us, it was just one month after we bought it. After a long, frustrating e-mail exchange, they finally took pity on us and replaced it. The next time we were extra careful, but still ended up the a cracked lens (it got bumped while in my husband's coat pocket). The appeal of these cameras is that you're supposed to be able to take them anywhere, but they are so fragile, you'll be scared to use it at all. This is why on most cameras, the lens is slightly recessed, so it won't some into contact when placed on a surface. But on the Ultra HD, the lens actually sticks out, making it even more vulnerable to scratches and bumps. This seems like a pretty serious design flaw and one that I hope the company figures out.
It's a shame because it really was fun to use.
